TSSAA Board of Control votes on football changes

The TSSAA Board of Control met Thursday, voting to make changes to the football post season.

Officiating crews will be expanded from five officials to seven officials for the quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds. The cost for the extra officials will be paid from the TSSAA’s percentage of gate receipts.

In addition to officiating, the board voted to approve changes for post season bracketing.

The change comes in the wake of a mistake in the 2012 team seeding. Because of a error in interpreting tie breakers by the TSSAA, Cleveland High School was selected for the playoffs. It was later discovered Sullivan South High School had actually earned the spot.

To affect the fewest number of teams, the TSSAA chose to insert Sullivan South directly into Cleveland’s playoff slot, forcing the team to travel over 300 miles to Columbia High School in the first round.

Playoff brackets will now be released at 11 a.m. on the Saturday preceding the first post season round of games.

Schools have until 4 p.m. to appeal to the state if an error is suspected and necessary corrections will be made before the brackets are declared final.

The TSSAA also released financial reports from fall sports post season earning.

Football cleared $745,692 in 2012, over $30,000 less than it did the season before. Earnings for golf, girls' soccer and cross country where also down in 2012.

Volleyball showed a $15,000 increase and cheer and dance earned $6,000 more.
