Trailing by 13 after the first period, the young Lady Redskins never gave up and fought their way back to get their first district win of the season 46-41 over the Lady Highlanders of Scott County Thursday night in Loudon.
After falling behind 8-0 to start the game, Jara Gasper got the Lady Redskins on the board with a three. From there Scott County outscored Loudon 10-2 as Savannah Berry was the only Lady Redskin to find the mark the rest of the period. That's when the hosts fought back. Loudon used the press and the long ball in the second period to cut into the Scott County lead. Katie Settlemyre connected twice from beyond the arc while Katie Phillips also got a three point shot to drop. Settlemyre then scored on a driving layup as the Lady Redskins won the period 11-6 and closed the margin to 24-16 at halftime.
Loudon came out hot to start the third period getting field goals from Gasper and Katie Reeves along with a pair of free throws by Berry to close the gap to two at 24-22. Scott County came right back with an 8-0 run to go back up by 10 with a minute to go in the third. Gasper then connected with 41 seconds left to make it an eight point game, at 32-24, headed to the final period.
Once again the Lady Redskins came out hitting on all cylinders to start the fourth. After a Settlemyre free throw, Gasper hit back to back field goals. Berry hit a layup and Gasper got a runner down the lane to complete a 9-0 run to give the Lady Redskins their first lead of the game at 33-32 with 5:47 to go.
Scott County reclaimed the lead on a pair of free throws before Gasper made one of two to tie the game. Mikala Hampton then nailed a three from the left elbow to give the Lady Redskins the lead for good at 37-34 with three minutes left in the game. From there Loudon made 9 of 10 free throws to wrap up the win.
Gasper led all scorers with 16. Settlemeyer followed with 11 and Berry with 10 also reached double figures for the Lady Redskins. Whitney Phillips was the only Lady Highlander in double figures with 11.
"We got down early but managed to catch back up with our press. We cut the lead to two but fell back down by 10. These young ladies could have given up but tonight they showed they are getting better and gaining maturity by fighting back to win the game," Loudon Head Coach Bryant Collins said after the game.
The Lady Redskins hosted Lenoir City Saturday night and will next travel to Alcoa Tuesday night. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
