The Loudon Lady Redskins picked up a much-needed win Tuesday night when they swept past the Lady Wildcats 59-26 in Sweetwater.
"The way we came in and took over the game was big for us," Loudon Head Coach Bryant Collins said after the game. The Lady Redskins had lost their last seven games, but they picked up their sixth win of the season with the victory Tuesday night. "We've got to overcome being young and overcome the silly mistakes we've made," Collins said. "Tonight we did that."
The coach said he was disappointed by the showing in Monday night's loss to Kingston, so he had his team practice at Loudon before Tuesday night's game. "We changed some things up," Collins said. The Lady Redskins were slow to start after the practice, but quickly picked things up in the second quarter. Points were spread out fairly evenly between Jara Gasper, Savannah Berry, Julie Waddell, Mikala Hampton and Lindsey Strange in the period as the Lady Redskins outscored Sweetwater by 10 to lead 24-13 at the break.
The lead continued to expand in the third as the Lady Redskins posted 15 points - six each from Zoe Grimes and Berry and a three by Katie Phillips - and led 39-19 after three. The fourth saw Sweetwater pick things up a bit - with three of the first six points of the fourth - but the Lady Redskins answered with 14 straight points to seal the win.
Gasper led the way with 13 points for the Lady Redskins. Grimes added 11 and Berry posted 10. Allie Bowden led the Lady Wildcats with 11 points. "It's going to help us," Collins said of the impact of the win for the rest of the season. The young Lady Redskins have won back-to-back games only once so far this year.
They'll have a chance to do it for the second time on the season Friday night when they host Scott County for homecoming. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
