The Lady Cherokees still have a ways to go to compete for the top spot in District 3(A). After losing by 22 earlier in the season at home to Tellico, the Lady 'Kees went on the road to the Lady Bears Thursday night and fell 76-46.
Greenback turned the ball over 35 times in the first three quarters and struggled just to get the ball past the half-court line in the first quarter as they watched the still-unbeaten in district play Lady Bears cruise to the win. Tellico opened the game with a quick 5-0 lead, but Hannah Dukes answered it with a three. After a bucket by Tellico, Samantha McCollum and Dukes combined for four straight points to tie the game at seven with 3:18 left in the first. That would be the closest the Lady 'Kees would get the rest of the night.
From there, the Lady Bears went on a 15-0 run to close out the first quarter with a 22-7 lead. Dukes began the second quarter with a pair of free throws, but Tellico answered with four straight points. The Lady 'Kees fought back from there, however, as Sarah Rhyne, Ashley Brown and Dukes combined to cut the deficit to 13, at 30-17.
Tellico kept its extended lead, however, as it closed out the half on a 9-2 run to lead 39-19 at the break. The Lady Bears opened the third with six straight points before Dukes scored five of the next seven points to cut the gap to 23.
Tellico didn't let up, however, as it went on a 12-6 run to finish the third quarter up 59-30. Sarah Rhyne was the only Lady 'Kee to score during that run, as she hit a pair of threes. After Dukes opened the fourth with a three, it was more of the same for the Lady Bears. They scored six of the next eight points before McCollum hit a short jumper to cut the gap to 30. After the teams traded buckets, Rhyne drained a three and McCollum hit a pair of free throws to close the margin to 27.
Tellico closed out the game on a 5-2 run, however, with the only points for Greenback coming from Meredith Duncan. After the game, Greenback Head Coach Ed McCollum expressed displeasure that the Lady Bears' starters remained in throughout the entirety of the game, despite Greenback shifting reserves in for much of the second half.
Dukes led the way in scoring for Greenback with 18 points. Rhyne followed with 14 and McCollum added 10. Sheann Cole paced the Lady Bears with 25 points, while Jessi Parson and Kristian Moses followed with 17 each.
The Lady 'Kees will return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Wartburg. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
