The Lenoir City Panthers showed their depth Tuesday night when star Tyler Hood scored just two points in the first half, but the Panthers still recorded an 83-70 home win over Farragut. Hood played less than half the first half as he quickly recorded two fouls and had to sit for most of the half. However, that didn't slow down the Panther offense, as they built a 20-8 lead after the first quarter.
Hood recorded his second foul with just less than three minutes to go in the first quarter and shortly after, the Panthers went on a 12-0 run. Tyler Thomas started the run with a three-point play and then he added a pair of free throws and Hayden Park hit a layup to put Lenoir City ahead by 12 after one. The second quarter started with five straight LC points. Park hit a layup 18 seconds in and then Thomas tossed in a free throw.
Park scored the 11th and 12th points of the run as he drove in for yet another layup. Once the run was completed, the Panthers held a 25-8 lead. The Admirals slowly whittled the lead down from there, but threes by Park and Dylan Powers helped the Panthers to hold a 39-29 lead at the half.
"The rest of the team took on the challenge," Lenoir City Head Coach Kevin Windle said of filling in for Hood's absence. "That's why we're a good team." Windle specified Park, Thomas and Caleb Mabry as keys to the Panther first half effort. "They stepped their games up to the next level," Windle said.
For the first time since early in the first quarter, the Admirals cut the lead to less than 10 early in the third as Stephen Britten hit a short jumper to cut the gap to eight. However, freshman Jordan Hall hit a deep jumper and a layup and Lenoir City's lead expanded back to 12.
The Panther lead continued to waver between seven and 12 points for most of the period and Dylan Moore ensured it stayed at 12 heading to the fourth as he knocked down a three from the right side with 3.3 seconds left in the third. As the teams headed to the fourth, the Panthers clung to their 58-46 lead.
Farragut wouldn't quit, however, as Reese Browning opened the fourth with a trey and followed that up with a layup to cut the gap to seven. The teams traded points from there until Powers drained a three with 4:27 left in the game and, after Park pulled in a rebound, Hood hit a mid-range jumper to extend LC's lead back out to 11, at 68-57. The Panthers sealed their win over the next 3:11 as they knocked down all of their 13 free throws to close out the game.
"Knocking down free throws basically won this game for us," Windle said after the game. Windle called the win a "team effort" and added that this win is "going to show other teams out there you can't just focus on Tyler Hood."
Powers finished the game with 21 points, Hood added 17 (15 in the second half), Hall tacked on 14 and Jared Hilton tallied 10. Powers hit five three pointers in the game. "Anytime he's shooting well, we're a very, very good team," Windle said.
The Panthers will return to the road Friday when they travel to Heritage. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
