For the second game in a row, the Lady Panthers led most of the game but still found themselves on the losing side as they fell at home to Farragut Tuesday night 52-42.
Things started out very well for the Lady Panthers as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind a three by Taylor Robinson, two free throws by Jessica Pace and one from Tyler Powers.
The Lady Admirals slowly fought their way back, closing to within 8-6, but then Robinson drained a three to put the Lady Panthers ahead 11-6 after one. The Lady Admiral comeback wasn't stopped there, however, as Hayley Newby hit a layup and Jessica Griswald followed with a three to tie the game at 11. Robinson came back with a deep jumper on the baseline to retake the lead, but Newby answered right back with a layup to retie the game.
The see-saw stopped moving momentarily as Shannon Parks and Pace both tossed in buckets to give Lenoir City a 17-13 lead. Farragut fought back to tie it at 17, but Powers quickly answered with a three. Neither team scored for the next minute and a half, but the Lady Admirals' Newby broke the scoreless streak with a midrange jumper with 8.9 seconds left in the half.
The teams headed to the locker room with the Lady Panthers hanging on to a 20-19 lead. Control began to sway over to the Farragut side early in the third as Robinson began things with a layup, but Farragut scored the next five points to take its first lead, 24-22. It didn't last long as Powers drained a three on the other side, but Farragut's Katie Cargo followed with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 25.
Two minutes later, Powers drained her second trey of the quarter, but the Lady Admirals answered the shot with seven straight points to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Lady Panthers were not to be deterred as Catherine Hunley broke the run with a three from the right side, but Alex Newby hit a short jumper 30 seconds before the buzzer to send the teams to the fourth quarter with Farragut ahead 34-31.
Twice the Lady Panthes climbed to within one point of the Lady Admirals - once on a layup by Dawn Radford and once on a layup by Parks - but the Lady Admirals made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
"I thought our effort was there," Lenoir City Head Coach Joe Lee said after the game. He had two issues with his team's play, however. "We have got to do a better job boxing out," he said, adding, "We turned the ball over too much in the second half."
The Lenoir City offense turned the ball over 17 times in the game to 11 by Farragut. The Lady Panthers also got outrebounded 18-3 on the offensive end. They did a better job on the defensive boards, however, trailing Farragut just 21-19.
There was also a significant foul difference between the teams, as Farragut shot 26 in the game and Lenoir City took just eight free throws. "What upsets me about the game is they pressed the whole game and we never got in the one-and-one," Lee said. The coach added, however, "we've just got to get better and overcome that."
Robinson and Powers combined to lead the Lady Panthers in scoring with 13 points each. Hayley Newby led the Lady Admirals with 16, while Cargo added 11 and Anna Brinson tacked on 10.
The Lady Panthers will hit the road Friday night as they travel to Heritage. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
