After a close first half, the Lady Cherokees found their rhythm on offense and pulled away to a 50-32 win over the Lady Rams at Grace Christian Friday night. The Lady 'Kees have had to adapt to a rather odd schedule with Greenback School having been closed most of last week, as they've had to find a place to practice and get into some type of routine.
"It's tough when you can't practice in your own gym," Greenback Head Coach Ed McCollum said. "We've had to go to churches with a gym just to get to practice. Also, when you're not in school, the girls get out of their usual routine and it takes a while to get going." Due in part to adjusting to the odd schedule, the Lady 'Kees found themselves trailing 15-14 after the first quarter and then down four to start the second.
A very slow paced second quarter allowed them to take a lead, however, as they fought back from a three-point deficit to lead by one at the break. Ashley Brown, Courtneay Sheedy and Samantha McCollum combined for a six point run that gave the Lady 'Kees the halftime lead. The third quarter saw McCollum, Sarah Rhyne and Hannah Dukes take over. After a Grace bucket, the trio scored the next 13 points to give Greenback a 36-25 lead. After another Lady Ram bucket, Rhyne hit two free throws and Greenback led by 11 after three.
The Lady 'Kee defense allowed just five points as McCollum, Dukes, Kaylan Chapparo, Rhyne and Meredith Duncan put the game away. The Lady 'Kees will return to action Monday night at Berean at 6 p.m.
