Over the past few seasons, the Grace Christian Rams and Greenback Cherokees have had numerous tough games against each other battling for district and region supremacy. Friday night, the two teams met at Grace Christian and the Rams enjoyed the upper hand against the youthful Cherokees as Greenback fell 72-37.
Young teams often struggle to keep momentum in check and that was shown at the start of the game as the Rams grabbed the early momentum and scored the first 11 points of the game. The undaunted 'Kees fought back, however, to close the gap to four, at 11-7. An Eric Williams bucket with 49 seconds left in the first, however, gave Grace a 13-7 lead heading to the second.
The 'Kees continued to hang close to the Rams, falling behind by 11 but then fighting back as Nick Sabo hit three straight free throws. And then, after a Grace charity toss, Tyler Bryant hit a jumper to cut the gap to seven. Toward the end of the half, however, the Rams began to build their lead. Daniel Byram and Bryce Kendrick both drained threes and Williams knocked down a bucket to put Grace Christian ahead 28-13 with 1:11 left in the second quarter.
Mykal Titlow countered with a basket, but Byram came right back with a trey with 1.3 seconds before the buzzer sounded. As the teams headed to the locker rooms, the Rams enjoyed a 31-15 lead over the young 'Kees. The teams opened the third quarter trading shots for the first half, but a 10-1 Grace Christian run that ended with 3:23 to go in the third cemented the Ram win.
The teams then recommenced trading shots until the game headed to the fourth with Grace ahead 58-32. The 'Kees scored just five points in the fourth quarter - two on a bucket by Jordan Collis, two more on free throws by Austin Bryant and one on a charity toss by Michael Kron.
No Cherokee scored in double digits, as Trevor Franklin led the way with nine points. Grace's Adarius Wilson led all scorers with 14 points. Bryam added 12 and Corey Burdette and Kendrick tallied 11 each.
The Cherokees will return to action Monday night when they travel to Berean Christian. The game was rescheduled from Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
