In only their second year of existence, the North Panthers have won their first ever East Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (ETMSAA) AAA State Championship with a 28-0 win over Avery Trace Saturday evening.
The Panther defense didn't allow a point all season as the only points surrendered by the team came on a kickoff return for a touchdown. The Panthers outscored their opponents 221-6 over the nine game season (including playoffs).
Tailback Ryan Weaver took home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award after rushing for 96 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Weaver scored three touchdowns overall in the title game, one on an interception return and one on a punt return. For the season, Weaver has gained 833 yards on 78 carries, for an average of 10 yards per attempt. He scored seven touchdowns on the ground.
Billy Spencer accounted for the other touchdown, running a punt back 55 yards for a touchdown. The Panther defense surrendered just 94 total yards Saturday evening, allowing less than three yards per play. They also held Avery Trace to just 60 yards on 23 carries.
For the season, the strong North defense surrendered just 336 yards on the ground and 191 through the air. That averages out to 2.13 yards per play and 58 yards per game. This was the second championship game appearance in the short history of the North Panthers, as they also made it last year, but lost.
This year, they completed the perfect season with a championship.
