Fred L. "Roy" Kennedy, 84, Lenoir City, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 after a brief illness. He was a member of Deer Lodge Congregational Church.
He was born Feb. 9, 1928 in Indianapolis, Ind., his family moved to Deer Lodge when he was an infant. Roy graduated from Sunbright High School in 1945.
He served in the United States Navy from 1946 until 1948. After military service he settled in Detroit, Mich., where he started a family and worked his way through carpenter apprenticeship school as a member of the Carpenter's Union. Roy later formed Great Lakes Building Corporation and began building homes and apartments as a general contractor.
In the 1960s and early 1970s his companies built many custom homes, including custom homes for handicapped veterans throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.
In 1971, Roy moved back to Morgan County where he opened Kennedy Building Supply on Main Street in Wartburg, next to Crouch's store. This store grew into Kennedy True Value Hardware & Home Center which Roy operated until the mid-1990's.
Meanwhile, he built many homes and apartment buildings in the Wartburg area. After selling his store, he moved to Lenoir City where he had built apartments and the home that he made his final residence.
Over the years, Roy taught Sunday school at Deer Lodge Congregational Church, enjoyed fishing, gardening and creating a beautiful landscape around his home. He was a hard-working man of faith.
Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by his parents, Fred S. and Elsie Kennedy; sister, Letty Raczkowski; brother, Chester (Ray) Kennedy.
He is survived by his wife, Delsie; daughter, Sue Yeakey and husband John; sons, Dennis Kennedy, Bob Kennedy and wife Casey, and Chris Kennedy: granddaughters, Jennifer Hall and Mandy Kennedy; step-grandsons, Tyler, Travis and Tory Duncan; sisters, Gene Anleitner, Dorothy Heidel, Marie McCartt and Janice Bogdany: brothers, Farrell Kennedy and wife Margie, Bill Kennedy and wife Joan; and a host of nieces, nephews great-grandchildren and friends.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg. Funeral services followed with Pastor Rose Hermanot officiating.
Graveside services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Deer Lodge.
